Republican Rep. Jason Chaffetz of Utah said DEA chief Michele Leonhart has allowed problems at the agency to fester for more than a decade. "It's time for her to go," Chaffetz told The Associated Press. "I don't have confidence in her, nor does the majority of the committee."
Federal court rejects Third Amendment claim, say police are allowed to quarter in private homes without the owner’s consent
    Posted: 13 Apr 2015 10:00 PM PDT
Back in 2013, a lot of attention focused on a Third Amendment claim against Henderson, Nevada police officers. I wrote about the case here. The Third Amendment, which forbids the “quartering” of “soldiers” in private homes without the owner’s consent, is often the butt of jokes because it is so rarely litigated. But in this case, a Nevada family claimed that local police had violated the Amendment by forcibly occupying their home in order to gain a “tactical advantage” against suspected criminals in the neighboring house.

New Mexico Is The Second State To Ban Police From Seizing Innocent People’s Property
    Posted: 13 Apr 2015 10:00 PM PDT
Last week, New Mexico became the second state to ban the practice of civil asset forfeiture, which allows state and local law enforcement agencies to seize property from innocent people. Gov. Susana Martinez (R) signed HB 560 on Friday, which states that property can only be seized if a person is “arrested for an offense to which forfeiture applies, the person is convicted by a criminal court of the offense, and the state establishes by clear and convincing evidence that the property is subject to forfeiture.” In other words, property seizure is only permitted if a person is guilty of a crime. The bill, which received unanimous approval in the state legislature, was first introduced by Rep. Zachary Cook (R).
Genetically Engineered Salmonella To Be Used As Potential Cancer Treatment For Someone Else
    Posted: 13 Apr 2015 10:00 PM PDT
Salmonella is a group of bacteria that causes Salmonellosis, an infection that typically results after eating food gone bad, or raw, uncooked foods. The symptoms of the infection are diarrhea, fever, and abdominal pain. Your initial instinct, then, is to stay as far away from Salmonella as possible. But new research provides a turning point for the history of Salmonella: Genetically modified versions of the bacteria might actually be used to kill cancer cells, according to a study published in mBIO.

If that sounds a bit bizarre, the researchers say the new technology could be used to guide firefighters through burning buildings or take the elderly home when they get lost, The Telegraph reported.

City Failed to Fix Bridge Where Man’s Daughter Died, Dad Fixes It Himself, So they Arrested Him
    Posted: 13 Apr 2015 10:00 PM PDT
Two high school students were tragically killed last month after 18-year-old Taylor Swing lost control of his vehicle on a curve. The high school student’s car then careened over the edge of a bridge. Swing, as well as his passenger, 16-year-old Cecily Hamilton, both drowned after the vehicle landed in the creek below. There are currently barricades along the length of the bridge, but none at the entrance after the curve. Had there been barricades, Hamilton’s father believes that the teenagers may still be alive today. Since this tragic accident, the father of 16-year-old Cecily, Shannon Hamilton, has been attempting to get the county to construct barricades to prevent any more lives being lost. Unsatisfied with the county seeming to blow off the issue, the grieving father decided to take matters into his own hands to make his community a safer place. Hamilton began constructing temporary safety features himself using materials donated by neighbors.
