    A "INTERNET" HÁ 25 ANOS - Crónica (M1790 - 07AL/2015)

    II GUERRA MUNDIAL A CORES (M1789 - 27PM/2015)

Is This the End of NATO?

    by Fortuna's Corner
[ltr]Conclusion: For all the Alliance's military shortcomings, NATO can deter Putin's aggression until 2020 at least, with current forces. However, deterring the Kremlin's Special War, which I have long counseled the West to get serious about, may prove a more serious challenge. The West has the ability to keep a rampaging Russia restrained. Sending defensive […]

    Maritime Security Student Writers Week

barriers in the conversation between younger and older voices, military and civilians, and across international partners.  Along these lines, we recently hosted our first annual Maritime Security Scholarship Essay Contest.  We are pleased to announce the three contest winners and publish their essays here this week.  They are:
1st Place, and the winner of a $500 cash scholarship is Steel Templin, from Groveland, Florida.
2nd Place, receiving a $250 scholarship is Griffin Cannon, from South Burlington, Vermont.
Honorable mention goes to Nolan McEleney, of Gaithersburg, Maryland, who will receive $150.
The challenges piracy poses to freedom on the seas is a timeless topic, so it's no wonder that two of our winning essayists decided to cover this topic.  Perhaps as a sign of trends to come, they both suggest a role for unmanned systems in fighting piracy.  Our honorable mention winner outlines the importance the space domain to maritime security.  Well done to our participants and winners!  We look forward to seeing many more fine essays next year.[/ltr]

UAE F-16s arrive in Jordan to support war on ISIS. Some of them don’t wear national markings

    by David Cenciotti
[ltr]Six UAE Air Force F-16s have arrived in Jordan.
Photographs showing of six United Arab Emirates Air Force F-16E/F Block 60 jets arriving at an airbase in Jordan were released by the Jordanian Armed Forces on Feb. 8.
The images depict the warplanes which were deployed to help Jordan and the US-led coalition in the fight against ISIS. The kingdom has conducted 56 air strikes against ISIS positions in the last three days after it launched an air campaign following the burning alive of the pilot Maaz al-Kassasbeh captured on Dec. 24.
According to the information released by Amman, C-17 cargo planes and A330 tanker aircraft supported the deployment.
The UAE Air Force had temporarily suspended its participation in the coalition air strikes over concern for the safety of its aircrews, following Kassasbeh's murder.
Interestingly, two of the aircraft depicted on arrival in Jordan, don't wear the national flag on the tail. This is not the first time aircraft taking part in real operations are stripped off their national markings. Some U.S. drones deployed in sensitive areas perform their clandestine missions "unmarked."
However, since the participation of the UAE to the anti-ISIS air war is far from being secret, the lack of the UAE flag on the tail of two F-16s could be explained by their participation in the far less advertised air strikes on Islamist militias in Libya last year.
