[size=31]Israel-Hamas Conflict Escalates[/size]
Hostilities between Israel and Hamas showed no sign of abating on Friday despite U.S. president Barack Obama's statement that the United States is prepared to mediate a cessation of hostilities. Hamas vowed to intensify its attacks (NYT) while Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he was not considering a ceasefire (Haaretz). Israelshelled southern Lebanon (Daily Star) after a rocket emanating from there landed in open space in northern Israel, while a Gaza-launched rocket hit an Israeli gas station, causing an explosion that wounded three (Haaretz). As Israeli airstrikes on Gaza continued overnight, Palestinian health officials said the cumulative death toll exceeded one hundred (Ma'an).
Analysis
"Hamas seems to be making the assumption that its recent actions and defiance of ultimatums will not lead to another all-out war, banking on Israel's reluctance to orchestrate another full-scale military campaign in Gaza. But the group's strategy—to project strength, which improves its domestic reputation, and keep internal conflict at bay through a short-term escalation—is an extremely risky gambit," writes Benedetta Berti for Sada.
"The failure of Mr Netanyahu to make peace a priority is dangerous. He did not make the most of the recent plan put forward by John Kerry, America's secretary of state. Both he and Mr Abbas recklessly pursued short-term advantage during the talks, leaving their countries vulnerable to those who argue that, with the hopes of peace exhausted, conflict is all that remains," writes the Economist.
"Despite this rhetoric, international accountability for crimes in Palestine and Israel is as unlikely today as it has ever been. None of the key actors – the Palestinian Authority, Israel, Western states or the ICC itself – is able or willing to achieve justice for the victims and survivors of this intractable war," writes Mark Kersten for the Washington Post.

Germany Expels Top U.S. Intelligence Officer
German foreign minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier defended Germany's decision to expel the CIA's Berlin station chief as the "inevitable" response (Reuters) to mounting evidence of U.S. spying operations (Spiegel), but said he would seek to mend the alliance with his U.S. counterpart John Kerry.
UKRAINE: As many as thirty Ukrainian troops may have been killed (Reuters) along the Russian border in a rebel attack, which, if confirmed, would be the deadlinest for government forces yet. The event comes a day after separatist leaders vowed they would hold Donetsk, warning residents of an evacuation (WSJ).

Argentina Continues Debt Talks

‘Diplomatic earthquake’ as Germany halts spy cooperation with US

The German government has instructed its intelligence agencies to limit their cooperation with their American counterparts “to the bare essentials” until further notice, according to media reports. The move follows news that Berlin requested on Thursday the immediate removalfrom Germany of the United States Central Intelligence Agency chief of station —essentially the top American official in the country. The request came after two German citizens, one working for the BND, Germany’s main external intelligence organization, and one working for the country’s Federal Ministry of Defense, were allegedly found to have been secretly spying for the US. German media reported on Thursday that the temporary halt in Berlin’s intelligence collaboration with Washington applies across the spectrum, with the exception of areas directly affecting tactical security concerns for Germany, such as the protection of its troops in Afghanistan, or defending against immediate terrorist threats. Sources in the German capital claimed that the removal of the CIA station chief was technically a “recommendation for his departure”, and did not constitute an official diplomatic expulsion. However, German observers described the incident as a “diplomatic earthquake”, which would have been unthinkable as a policy option for the German government, barring actions against “pariah states like North Korea or Iran”. This is not the first time an American intelligence officer has been asked to leave Germany. Berlin expelled another CIA officer in the 1990s, after it emerged that the American intelligence Agency had tried to recruit a German official at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs. However, unlike the current imbroglio, the previous spy affair was handled discretely and with almost no media fanfare, as is customary among allies. The decision to recommend the CIA station chief’s removal was reportedly made at a senior governmental level, following a “fruitless” telephone exchange between CIA Director John Brennan and Klaus-Dieter Fritsche, the coordinator between the German Chancellery and the BND. According to German newsmagazine Der Spiegel, Brennan offered Fritsche no apology and had “nothing to contribute other than clichés about transatlantic ties”, as well as his expressed irritation about the way the media were handling the incident.
