Scientists use nanoparticles to shut down mechanism that drives cancer growth
    Posted: 11 Jul 2015 09:00 PM PDT
When scientists develop cancer therapies, they target the features that make the disease deadly: tumor growth, metastasis, recurrence and drug resistance. In epithelial cancers — cancers of the breast, ovaries, prostate, skin and bladder, which begin in the organs’ lining — these processes are controlled by a genetic program called epithelial–mesenchymal transition.
Native American Tribes Declare Sovereignty, Break Away from State of Maine
    Posted: 11 Jul 2015 09:00 PM PDT
In August of 2011, Governor LePage signed an Executive Order recognizing a “special relationship” between the sovereign State of Maine, and the sovereign tribes within the State. In this order, the Governor instructed all State agencies to include a tribal liaison, whose role would be to facilitate communication and direct policy in all areas of State jurisdiction in such a way as to include the voice and interest of native peoples. The Order instructs that “the State and Tribes should work together as one,” and Tribal interests should be heeded when developing policies and procedures “on matters that significantly or uniquely affect those tribes.”
Germany Never Intended For Greece To Stay In The Euro
    Posted: 11 Jul 2015 09:00 PM PDT
There never was going to be any deal. All along, Germany has been seeking to establish conditions that would never be met so that they could force Greece out of the eurozone. But the Germans had to do this subtly so that they would end up looking “reasonable” and would not turn the rest of the eurozone against them. So why does Germany want to get rid of Greece? Well, to be honest, it is because the Germans are sick and tired of paying for Greek mistakes. In Germany, there is an obsession with having a balanced budget. They even have a term for it – “the black zero“.
Antipsychotic use rising among teens and young adults Prescriptions for boys outpacing girls during elementary, high school and college years
    Posted: 11 Jul 2015 09:00 PM PDT
A growing number of teens and young adults are being prescribed antipsychotics, a new study suggests. In particular, it appears they’re being used to treat attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) – a condition for which the powerful drugs are not approved. The percentage of teens using antipsychotics rose from 1.10 percent in 2006 to 1.19 percent in 2010. Use among young adults ages 19 to 24 rose from 0.69 percent to 0.84 percent, the study found.
Why Greece Is The Precursor To The Next Global Debt Crisis
    Posted: 11 Jul 2015 09:00 PM PDT
The one undeniable truth about the debt drama in Greece is that each of the conventional narratives—financial, political and historical—has some claim of legitimacy. For example, spendthrift Greeks shunned fiscal discipline: here’s an account from 2011 that lays out the gory details: The Big Fat Greek Gravy Train: A special investigation into the EU-funded culture of greed, tax evasion and scandalous waste.
Leaked Documents Show FBI, DEA, & Army Can Control Your Computer
    Posted: 11 Jul 2015 09:00 PM PDT
Leaked emails from an Italian-based hacking company reveal that government agencies engage in surveillance more invasive than previously thought, spending millions of dollars on spyware and malware software to accomplish their questionable goals. Tellingly, their use of the product places them squarely in the same category as other repressive regimes around the world. After hackers ironically hacked Hacking Team, a Milan-based company that sells strictly to governments, hundreds of gigabytes of emails and financial records were leaked. The emails show that the FBI, DEA, and U.S. Army all purchased software that enables them to view suspects’ photos, emails, listen to and record their conversations, and activate the cameras on their computers, among other things.
    Syrian intelligence chief assassinated
    Posted: 11 Jul 2015 09:00 PM PDT
In what may be one of the highest-profile assassinations since civil war broke out in 2011, a senior official in Syria’s most powerful intelligence service was found shot in the head, opposition sources claimed Wednesday. he body of Maj. Gen. Nadeem Shallah, head of the Damascus branch in the Air Force Intelligence Directorate, was found in his car in the Syrian capital’s al-Hamra street, Israeli media quoted unnamed Syrian sources as saying.
Argentina’s New Intelligence Agency tasked with preventing “economic coups,” bank runs, and currency offloads
    Posted: 11 Jul 2015 09:00 PM PDT
On July 7, the Cristina Kirchner administration published a decree setting the new guidelines for Argentina’s Federal Intelligence Agency (AFI) formed in January. The new intelligence agency will be tasked with unique roles, such as preventing “economic coups,” bank runs, and currency offloads.
How Fascist Capitalism Functions: The Case Of Greece
    Posted: 11 Jul 2015 09:00 PM PDT
There is democratic capitalism, and there is fascist capitalism. What we have today is fascist capitalism; and the following will explain how it works, using as an example the case of Greece. Mark Whitehouse at Bloomberg headlined on 27 June 2015, “If Greece Defaults, Europe’s Taxpayers Lose,” and presented his ‘news’ report, which simply assumed that, perhaps someday, Greece will be able to get out of debt without defaulting on it. Other than his unfounded assumption there (which assumption is even in his headline), his report was accurate.
Texans organize 'Operation Counter Jade Helm' to keep an eye on the federal troops
    Posted: 11 Jul 2015 09:00 PM PDT
When the troops land in Texas for Operation Jade Helm next week, someone will be waiting for them. Hundreds of people have organized a "Counter Jade Helm" surveillance operation across the Southwestern states and in an effort to keep an eye on the contentious military drill that's sparked many suspicious of Uncle Sam's intentions.
Tunisia: 1,000 arrests and 15,000 prevented from leaving in counter-terrorism operations
    Posted: 11 Jul 2015 09:00 PM PDT
Tunisia authorities have arrested 1,000 people and banned a further 15,000 from leaving the country in the wake of two terror attacks in the country. Tunisian Prime Minister Habib Essid said the suspects were detained as part of the counter-terrorism operation in the wake of the shooting at the Bardo museum in March, which left 22 people dead, and the recent Sousse beach shooting that killed 38 people, including 30 Brits.
Conspiracy Fact – How the Government Conducted 239 Secret Bioweapon Experiments on the American People
    Posted: 11 Jul 2015 09:00 PM PDT
It all began in late September of 1950, when over a few days, a Navy vessel used giant hoses to spray a fog of two kinds of bacteria, Serratia marcescens and Bacillus globigii — both believed at the time to be harmless — out into the fog, where they disappeared and spread over the city. The unsuspecting residents of San Francisco certainly could not consent to the military’s germ warfare test, and there’s good evidence that it could have caused the death of at least one resident of the city, Edward Nevin, and hospitalized 10 others.
FBI and DOJ threaten tech companies with legislation forcing them to break encryption
    Posted: 11 Jul 2015 09:00 PM PDT
Yesterday FBI Director James Comey and Deputy Attorney General Sally Quillian Yates testified before a Senate Judiciary committee that they are stumped by end-to-end encryption and that while they want to work with the private sector to come up with a solution Yates noted that a legislative mandate “may ultimately be necessary” to force companies to comply. To back up their stand they also tried playing the terrorism card saying that ISIS is using social media to bolster their recruitment efforts. When a prospective terrorist is first contacted they are told to switch to an end-to-end encrypted messaging system where they can work out their nefarious plans in private. Comey said that the FBI is doing the best they can with existing tools and they have arrested dozens of potential terrorists in the past year, but sooner or later something is going to slip through.
Drug Lord "El Chapo" Guzman Escapes Again From Mexican Prison
    Posted: 11 Jul 2015 09:00 PM PDT
Mexican drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman escaped through a 1 mile tunnel that opened into the shower area of his cell, the Associated Press reports. Guzman has done what Mexican authorities promised would not happen after his re-capture last year — slipped out of a maximum security prison for the second time. Eighteen prison employees have been taken in for questioning, Security Commissioner Monte Alejandro Rubido said Sunday. A manhunt began immediately for the head of the powerful Sinaloa Cartel, which is believed to control most of the major crossing points for drugs at the U.S. border with Mexico.
No one is safe: $300 gadget steals encryption keys out of the air, and it’s nearly unstoppable
    Posted: 11 Jul 2015 09:00 PM PDT
Just when you thought you were safe, a new hacking toy comes along and rocks your world. Imagine a tool exists that lets hackers pluck encryption keys from your laptop right out of the air. You can’t stop it by connecting to protected Wi-Fi networks or even disabling Wi-Fi completely. Turning off Bluetooth also won’t help you protect yourself. Why? Because the tiny device that can easily be hidden in an object or taped to the underside of a table doesn’t use conventional communications to pull off capers. Instead it reads radio waves emitted by your computer’s processor, and there’s really nothing you can do to stop it.
Greek debt crisis: Goldman Sachs could be sued for helping hide debts when it joined euro
    Posted: 11 Jul 2015 09:00 PM PDT
Goldman Sachs faces the prospect of potential legal action from Greece over the complex financial deals in 2001 that many blame for its subsequent debt crisis. A leading adviser to debt-riven countries has offered to help Athens recover some of the vast profits made by the investment bank.
