Reform Pentagon Acquisition By Slowing Down the F-35
[Você precisa estar registrado e conectado para ver esta imagem.]Sen. John McCain, and Ashton Carter, the incoming next defense secretary, agree on one thing – the need for acquisition reform at the Pentagon. They should start by looking at the F-35 program. McCain, in his opening remarks at Carter’s confirmation hearing last week, provided a litany of examples of major programs that had incurred huge cost overruns, from a new aircraft carrier to the F-35 combat aircraft. His basic message was that if the Pentagon doesn’t change the way it buys weapons.
Chinese Military May Not Be the Juggernaut Some Assert It Is
[Você precisa estar registrado e conectado para ver esta imagem.]Washington can sometimes seem like a bunker, where assorted think tanks regularly lob hand grenades detailing what’s wrong with every nook and cranny of the U.S. military. This week, for a change, one got tossed outlining the fundamental weaknesses of the Chinese military. This is a big deal. Ever since the collapse of the Soviet Union, the prospect of a rising Chinese military has been cited as the justification for all sorts of U.S. weaponry.
F-22's role, impact in Inherent Resolve increasing
[Você precisa estar registrado e conectado para ver esta imagem.]The Air Force's most advanced fighter has been in battle against the Islamic State group for about five months, and has performed well enough to now be an anchor of airstrike sorties. The F-22 flew its first combat mission in September, striking an Islamic State headquarters building in Syria. Since then, the F-22 has flown as part of strike packages in most of the combat sorties as part of Operation Inherent Resolve in both Iraq and Syria.

    Maritime Security and the Arts

    by Scott C-P
[ltr]Earlier this year we ran a short series of submissions highlighting fiction's power to illuminate insights about possible futures. Our colleagues at War on the Rocks and the Atlantic Council run a similar, on-going project - the Art of Future Warfare - that is well worth checking out.
Next week we'll use the power of historical fiction to likewise draw out timeless themes of warfare and security with the help of our friends, the Scots. If you're in DC and would like to participate, let us know. Here's the official press release:
    Introducing #Shakespeare and Strategy
[Você precisa estar registrado e conectado para ver esta imagem.]This February, the Shakespeare Theater Company is bringing the National Theatre of Scotland’s production of David Greig’s Dunsinane to the nation’s capital. The STC’s Young Professionals Consortium, in partnership with The Strategy Bridge and the Center for International Maritime Security, has organized #Shakespeare and Strategy, a special online seminar to accompany this exciting play.
Dunsinane picks up where Macbethleaves off, telling the story of the fight to restore order and stability to Scotland after regicide. Grieg’s work is much more than a sequel to one of the great entries in the Western canon; written during the fall of Saddam Hussein’s Iraq, Grieg explores both the clash of national identities as well as the challenge of restoring peace and nation building in a hostile foreign land. As STC Artistic Director Michael Kahn says “Dunsinane is a timely and powerful piece, and one that serves our mission to produce works inspired by Shakespeare and his contemporaries, delivered in a modern voice. This is a play that will resonate with today's audiences.”
For the rest of the run of the play, you can look forward to hearing from the unique perspective of part of Dunsinane’s audience - young veterans, military officers, and defense professionals who will share their reactions on the play and how it relates to their own experiences and challenges.

Watch an F/A-18 Hornet guide a Tomahawk cruise missile into a moving ship

    by David Cenciotti
[ltr]A Hornet performs an airborne pickup of a Tomahawk Block IV cruise missile and guides it into a moving ship target.
On Jan. 27, a Tomahawk Land Attack Missile (TLAM) was tested against a moving target at sea off San Nicolas Island, California.
What is more, the TLAM was launched from a ship and guided into its target by an F/A-18E/F Super Hornet.
A video of the test was published by USNI News. It shows the missile launched from guided missile destroyer USS Kidd (DDG-100) and picked up by the aircraft, fly at low altitude towards the target chased by the Super Hornet and punch a hole through a container on a ship (scaring some pigeons away).
The Tomahawk IV can hit at a range of 1,000 miles and can adjust its flight path to pursuit moving targets. Guidance will eventually come from various platforms, including ISR (Intelligence Surveillance Reconnaissance) aircraft and, most probably, drones.
Accoring to USNI News, the new Tomahawk variant could serve as a gap filler until the Long Range Anti-Ship Missile (LARSM), the navalized version based on  the JASSM-ER, will be able to support the Navy's "distributed lethality" warfare strategy.

    by David Cenciotti
[ltr]Laser Guided Bombs, attack runs and some low level flying in a cool footage featuring Brazilian Air Force A-1 light attack jets.
Known locally as "A-1", the AMX light attack aircraft is the backbone of the Força Aérea Brasileira.
The Brazilian Air Force operates about 50 such aircraft, based at Santa Cruz, near Rio de Janeiro, and Santa Maria, to the west of Porto Alegre, and upgraded to the A-1M variant, that features a glass cockpit, advanced avionics, a Mectron SCP-01 Scipio radar, Embraer BR2 data link, FLIR (Forward Looking Infra-Red), and support for theDASH IV helmet mounted display.
The aircraft, flying with the 1 Esquadrão/16 Grupo de Aviação Esquadrão "Adelphi", 1 Esquadrão/10 Grupo de Aviação Esquadrão "Poker" and 3 Esquadrão/10 Grupo de aviação Esquadrão "Centauro".
The A-1s are used in the air-to-surface as well as the reconnaissance role, the same kind of missions flown by the type within the Italian Air Force, that has also used the AMX in combat during Allied Force in Kosovo, during Operation Unified Protector in Libya and in support of ISAF in Afghanistan.
Along with the F-5s, the A-1s will be replaced by the Brazil’s JAS-39E/F multi-role fighters.

The following footage shows the Brazilian AMXs during training activities on the range.
